History of the Silver Slipper Club

The Silver Slipper Club was formed in October 1977 to preserve an evening of Ballroom and Latin American dancing in the days when Disco was the rage and the Cowley car works was in its hey-day.

Even at the first AGM the Secretary said he hoped the Silver Slipper Club would survive the next year. Happily he was able to hear those words repeated when we celebrated the Silver Anniversary of the Silver Slipper Club in October 2002. Sadly not all the original members were able to attend, but we had an excellent evening including a demonstration by a young couple that were not even born when the Silver Slipper Club began.

The Club was very pleased to celebrate its 30th Anniversary in October 2007. We were pleased to welcome a large attendance of longstanding and new members, who enjoyed a wonderful evening with two demonstrations by young couples.

Over the years the numbers attending the dances have fluctuated with the popularity of ballroom dancing. Also, sadly, age takes its toll on all of us.

Nowadays the popularity of dancing is improving thanks to certain television programmes, but we really want to encourage some younger people on to the dance floor.
